What is a cartridge heater?
Cartridge heaters are heating elements that have been designed to fit snugly into holes. They have a distinctive tube-like shape and come in a broad spectrum of diameters – ranging from approximately 1/4” to 3/4” (imperial) or 6.5mm to 16mm (metric sizes). These diameters are intended to slide easily into holes that have been drilled using a standard drill bit size.
The heating element itself consists of an outer metal enclosure, called a sheath. This is typically constructed from stainless steel and contains both an insulator and a coil of nickel-chromium heater wire. Most cartridge heaters have a standard electrical connection. However, there are other cable designs to choose from, including a right-angle exit, fixing tab and flange mounting, to name a few.


What are cartridge heaters used for?
Cartridge heaters offer superior heat transfer.  They are suitable for creating high temperatures (up to 800°C) and are commonly used for demanding localised heating.  For example, they’re often employed to heat solids such as dies, moulds and platens.  The heating element is inserted snugly inside a small hole and heat is transferred reliably and uniformly via the process of conduction.
They’re also a great option for:
*applications that require high watt density
*regulating air temperature in devices prone to condensation (e.g. control panels, closed circuits)
*fluid heating (including water and chemical solutions)
*rubber moulding
Industries that commonly use cartridge heaters include the medical industry, food manufacturing and production, packaging, and plastics moulding.  However, they’re a versatile and durable heating element and an ideal option for many heavy-duty applications.


How do cartridge heaters work?
It’s a very straightforward process. An alternating current is passed through the coil inside the cartridge heater – heating up the resistive wire. This heat energy is then transferred from the wire – first into the metal sheath and then the surrounding area – via the process of conduction.
All heat energy is transferred from the element to the surroundings and, as a result, cartridge heaters are deemed the most efficient way to transfer heat into a metal solid.


How do you install a cartridge heater?
Installing a cartridge heater incorrectly can lead to a wide range of issues, including the premature failure of your heating element.  So be sure to take your time and get it right.  It’s important to select the correct cartridge heater for the job and, if drilling the hole yourself, make sure it is the right size for the heater.  Always take care when using heat transfer lubricants and protect the leads as much as possible.

How can I prolong the life of a cartridge heater?
Cartridge heaters are designed to be ‘long-life’ – but, if used incorrectly, they can be prone to premature failure and there are steps that need to be taken to optimise their performance.
For example, you must select the ideal cartridge heater for your requirements. You need to consider the size, voltage and wattage very carefully. If the heating element does not fit snugly inside the hole, or the voltage rating or wattage is inappropriate for the application, heat will not be dissipated efficiently – leading to undue damage and the eventual breakdown of the element.
It’s also important to protect the cartridge heater against the environment. For example, high temperatures and excess movement can be problematic. Therefore, you should choose a suitable level of insulation and ensure that all leads are anchored into place. Moisture and impurities in the air can also cause the element to short circuit – but this can be prevented by using appropriate seals.
